About the Event
Join artist Oluwaseyi (Shayee) Awoyomi as she dialogs and shares the centuries old history related to her installation Iya Alaro, translated as “Mother of Dyers” and the language of dyed textile.
The indigo dyed textile is known in Yorubaland as Adire which translates as (adi) “to tie” and (re) “to dye.” This talk examines the role of the language of dyed textile through signs and symbols, the significance of the businesswomen in the Yoruba community, sustainability, and the journey of indigo.
