This watercolor in the Southampton History Museum’s collection was painted by the well-respected architect Grosvenor Atterbury. Although Atterbury was born in Detroit, his interest in architecture was probably inspired by his parent’s country house built in the Shinnecock Hills. While summering there from 1891 to 1893, Grosvenor studied with William Merritt Chase at the Shinnecock Summer School of Art. It was during this period, while traveling in Spain, that Grosvenor painted the Puerta del Privilegio (Door of the Privilege), in the gardens of the Alcazar of Seville.
Sharp-eyed fans will recognize the Alcazar as the location of the Dornish Water Gardens in the series Game of Thrones.
