This black wool hat features both black netting and a brown and cream colored ostrich feather. Additional accessories include a grosgrain ribbon, elastic chin strap and adjustable metal wire sweatband. Ribbon decorates around the crown and comes to a cross on the back. The feather is positioned at the front of the hat as it curves. The netting would be worn in front of the face and the hat would be worn on a tilt. The hat has a small up-curved brim and the back of the hat comes to a point.
The label on the inside reads "Glenover Henry Pollack, New York." Pollack was a hat body maker as early as 1917 and his company existed up until 1990. He sold his hat bodies to Halston and other famous designers. A consumer protection label is on the inside as well.
This hat is part of our extensive collection of Gilded Age hatsĀ found within the Rogers Mansion. It is on display for our 'High Style in the Gilded Age' exhibit at the Southampton History Museum.
