The home on display is the birthplace of Southampton's own Elizabeth Chaplin, painted by James Killeen in March of 1870. Killeen was in love with Chaplin and painted this scene as a present for her birthday of that year. Later on in life, Chaplin would marry another man who was not Mr. Killeen. She would become the grandmother of Leslie Eldridge, carpenter and cabinet maker of Southold (who passed in 1967).
