Faux Fur Women's Hat

Updated: Aug 26, 2022

This is a large, brimmed black felt and faux fur women's hat. The brim is more elongated and upturned at the front, while being shorter brimmed with a smaller upturn in the back. The hat has no markings or decoration.

Otherwise known as a "Picture Hat", these were popular from the mid 19th through the early 20th century. They even underwent a revival in popularity starting in the 1950's. The original picture hats were elaborately decorated but during their revival, designers chose to focus on size and shape above all else. This particular hat is deduced to be of the revival style due to its use of faux fur, but the style still captures their original incarnations from earlier in the century.

This hat is part of our extensive collection of Gilded Age hats found within the Rogers Mansion. It is on display for our 'High Style in the Gilded Age' exhibit at the Southampton History Museum.
